Launched in the spring of 1960, the Fiat 500 Giardiniera (Italian for “gardener”) was designed to offer more practicality and space than its standard 500 sibling. Fiat extended the wheelbase by four inches and cleverly relocated the engine horizontally beneath the rear floor, allowing for a flat load area and improved luggage capacity.
From 1968, production moved from Autobianchi to Fiat’s Mirafiori plant, and the Giardiniera remained in production until 1977. With a unique combination of suicide rear doors, side-hinged tailgate, and a full-length fabric sunroof, this model is a true standout in the microcar class.
