1949 MG TC – £13,995
This MG TC has been in the current ownership for an impressive 44 years, a testament to the care and attention it has received over the decades. It retains its original 1,250cc engine and 4-speed manual gearbox, offering an authentic driving experience. A comprehensive inspection was carried out in 2012, with all identified issues fully addressed at the time. To improve safety in modern traffic conditions, a discreet indicator system has also been sympathetically installed.
The MG TC stands as a true icon in British motoring history, widely regarded as one of the key vehicles that sparked the post-war fascination with lightweight sports cars. Returning servicemen brought the TC home with them, fuelling a surge of enthusiasm for open-top British motoring. Its upright, pre-war styling stood in contrast to more contemporary designs of the time, giving it a timeless charm that still resonates today. This particular 1949 example has remained with its current owner since 1981 and has been meticulously cared for and documented throughout. It represents a fantastic opportunity for any enthusiast seeking a genuine post-war British roadster with long-term ownership and well-preserved character.
First registered in 1949, this MG TC was acquired by its current owner in 1981. During this time, the car has enjoyed a life of careful custodianship. It was stored between 1987 and 1992, then actively used from 1993 through to 2012. Between 2012 and 2019, it saw limited use, before being laid up once again from 2019 to 2025. Importantly, it has been kept in a garage throughout the entire period of ownership. A comprehensive inspection was carried out in 2012, and all of the issues highlighted at the time were properly addressed. The report from this inspection is available for review, offering peace of mind to any prospective buyer.
The car presents very well overall, with the paintwork remaining in good original order with a light patina. While it could benefit from some light cosmetic bodywork to elevate its appearance, the structural integrity and finish are solid. The underside is reported to be in very smart condition. Inside, the red leather seats remain in excellent shape, showing minimal wear, and all dashboard instruments are functioning correctly. The dashboard itself does show some woodworm pitting, which may warrant attention for aesthetic reasons. Door cards are clean and in good condition, while the carpets reflect their age appropriately. A period-style radio has been thoughtfully installed, and modern indicators have been added for improved road safety, blending subtly into the car’s vintage look.
Mechanically, this MG TC stays true to its roots, featuring the original 1,250cc 4-cylinder engine paired with a 4-speed manual gearbox, which includes synchromesh on 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears. The engine has been maintained to original specifications and remains in good running condition. A new battery has recently been fitted. The car runs smoothly, handles traffic situations confidently, and has no known issues with the gearbox, clutch, or brakes. It is described as being ready to drive away and enjoy immediately.
