This 1977 Land Rover 101-FC Radio Body LHD was sourced from a collector in Poland July 2018 & soon as I laid eyes on that Tonka tough, cartoon like styling it was no doubts love at first site. The 101 nicknamed the 1 Tonny by British Troops saw active service in the Gulf War but was acquired to serve a very different mission for an NGO. The concept driving this project was to build an Overland Expedition Truck intended to work as a platform for Scuba-Diving & Photography projects developed out of remote locations in developing countries around the world with a Mission to develop awareness & support for Marine Environments & Coastal Communities.
Built on the Legendary & now rare 1977 Land Rover 101-FC Radio Body platform this Classic Overland Expedition Camper is as its history & nickname will contest to, literally ‘UNSTOPPABLE’ & being a LHD is ideal for American export.
This 101 has over the last 3 Years undergone one of the most extensive Resto-Mods of its Type. The “FC” in 101-FC stands for forward control, meaning the driver and passenger sit at the front of the rig on top of a newly fitted MOD Crated Rover 3.5 V8 engine which has been topped out with a new set of Twin Strombergs, New Distributer, Stainless Fuel Tank & Custom Stainless Exhaust, along with a fully reconditioned LT95 Transmission fitted with New Clutch & Slave. To keep things cool under the hood there’s a new oversized Aluminium Radiator & Oil Cooler with all new hoses, cables & linkage to boot.
The work doesn’t stop there, this Body-Off nut & bolt restoration saw the chassis pin-blasted, painted & fitted out with all new poly bushes. New Leaf Springs have been fitted to the rear with all Prop/Drive Shafts & Differentials either fully rebuilt/refurbished or replaced. The Steering Box has been fully refurbished and all ball joints have been replaced. On the Auto-Electrical front all the wiring looms have been replaced with upgraded LED Headlights & Indicators fitted Front & Rear.
The conversion of a 101-FC Radio Body to a fully fledged Overland Expedition Camper threw up a unique set of challenges.
